Specworlds - Exploring Speculative Fiction

Welcome to SPECWORLDS, a platform to explore worlds of speculative fiction through various lenses. Such worlds are found in creative works we read, watch and use for play.

This site is still under construction and will be launching in April.

Worlds of speculative fiction serve as a lens to critically view our world as it is, what it could have become or what it might be. Hence, such creative works are a tool to encourage social progress, especially those based on a deep understanding of history, science, philosophy, and try to offer political or sociocultural commentary. Thus, works of speculative fiction are a means to interpreting our world and our times.

On a personal level, exploring worlds of speculative fiction helps us foster our intuition, creativity and imagination. When we interact with such worlds via books, film or e-games, we even engage in unconscious processes, such as the archetypal world of the mythic unconscious or the make-believe worlds of gaming and VR.

This is a platform where we discuss handpicked works of speculative fiction. According to which medium they belong, we distribute them into the following sections: Read, Watch and Play. Our preferred genres are dystopian and science fiction (including its wide range of sub-genres. We tend to stay away from fantasy and high fantasy because we prefer to select fictional worlds that are closer to what our world might be. However, in the Play section we may make exceptions to that rule.

Our mission is to deepen the appreciation of a genre that is often dismissed or trivialised. We believe the genre gives more insight into the real world and helps us engage in it with greater personal and social awareness.

We have devised a visual rating system by which helps us define how much we liked a book, this from our perspective only as we do not consider ourselves literary, film or gameplay critics. This is purely regarding how and if the works sparked joy from our own personal perspective.
